JOB DESCRIPTION
Top-Level Tasks
Assist OSD, Joint Staff and Service personnel in the formulation of policy and process for the system safety element of systems engineering.
Coordinate efforts throughout the acquisition community to improve safety performance in the Department. Efforts may involve addressing common challenges, develop or improve processes, policy development, and align technical initiatives.
Represent the acquisition community in DoD system safety deliberations to represent acquisition needs, coordinate acquisition community needs and facilitate improving safety processes for the Department.

Responsibilities
Implement the Safety Technology Insertion Study
Develop and implement the Acquisition and Technology Programs Task Force (ATP TF) Master Plan
Input into updates to MIL-STD-882D
Develop safety policy guidance for use of Computer Programmable Logic Devices (CPLD)
Develop and issue Software System Safety Guidance
Hand/Arm Vibration Criteria for Tools and Glove Selection
Develop a web based Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment Tool
Implement the safety initiative for the Joint Capabilities Integration and Development System (JCIDS)
Facilitate the development of Joint Service Safety Testing Standards for the Joint Weapon Safety Technical Advisory Panel (JWSTAP)
Provide ESOH Requirements and guidance into DAU Curriculum Phase III

In addition, there are in excess of 10 initiatives that have been developed and are in the implementation phase of the process. There will be support requirements required

QUALIFICATIONS
Effective performance of the duties outlined requires a broad background of engineering education, training and progressively responsible experience which shows professional competence in broad areas of weapons safety, system safety, safety in the acquisition community, including OSD, Joint Staff, and the Services. Knowledge of DoD acquisition directives and regulations is required. Due to the multi-disciplinary nature of the work, course work at the graduate level is desirable. The position requires initiative, sound judgment, keep perception, superior analytical skills and dedication to the accomplishment of the national defense goals and objectives.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Academic degree in engineering discipline or other related engineering or science discipline
Experience as a member of a military staff, the OSD staff, or working with the OSD staff
Familiar with the topics and issues associated with System Safety and Systems Engineering
Have experience with System Safety, its use with weapons and combat systems within the Department. Understand the relationship and interdependencies between Systems Engineering, and System Safety and the implications of Software System Safety on overall operation of subject systems
Should be conversant with system safety processes utilized by Program Managers staff within the Services.
